The object popularly called the Baghdad Battery is a small ceramic vessel associated with Khujut Rabu, near ancient Ctesiphon in present-day Iraq. Inside the pot were a rolled copper cylinder, an iron rod and bitumen. In 1938, Iraq Museum laboratory director Wilhelm König proposed that this arrangement was a galvanic cell—an ancient battery made roughly two thousand years before Alessandro Volta’s celebrated experiments. The possibility is scientifically straightforward: separated copper and iron electrodes immersed in a suitable electrolyte can create a voltage. The archaeological question is much harder: was electricity what the makers intended? Replicas establish possibility, not historical use. When modern experimenters assemble copper and iron in a jar and add an acidic or alkaline liquid, the device can produce current. A 2026 experimental paper by Alexander Bazes proposed that solder and the ceramic vessel could form a second, outer tin-air cell connected with the familiar inner copper-iron cell. His reconstruction reportedly exceeded 1.4 volts and drove visible electrochemical reactions. This is a serious addition to the discussion because it tries to account for features neglected by simpler replicas. It demonstrates that a device based on König’s published arrangement can do more than make a voltmeter twitch. But an experiment can prove that a reconstruction works without proving that an ancient object was built or used that way. Penn Museum archaeologist William Hafford has emphasized a foundational problem: the Khujut Rabu pieces were already separated when König examined them, carried three museum numbers, and may have been arranged according to König’s battery hypothesis. No reliable excavation record fixes the components in the now-famous configuration. Comparable jars from Seleucia and Ctesiphon sometimes contained multiple copper cylinders, while metal rods could occur outside the vessels. Some were found near incantation bowls and ritual deposits. That context supports another interpretation: sealed containers for written spells, prayers or curses, with the different materials having ritual rather than electrical functions. The proposed applications also remain unconfirmed. Electroplating is frequently suggested because König believed some ancient gold-coated objects had been plated electrically. Specialists have pointed instead to established gilding techniques, including mercury fire-gilding, and no securely identified workshop, wires, connected bank of cells or electroplated object has been tied to these jars. Medical stimulation and alchemical demonstrations have also been proposed, but neither has direct archaeological documentation. The absence of evidence is not proof that an ephemeral practice never occurred; it does mean that plausible uses cannot be reported as discoveries. The original object’s uncertain survival makes resolution harder. It was held by the Iraq Museum and is widely reported missing after the 2003 looting. Researchers therefore cannot readily re-examine its residues, solder, corrosion, manufacturing marks or component relationships with modern methods. Claims about its date are also less secure than popular summaries imply because its excavation context was poorly recorded. The fairest conclusion is deliberately two-sided. A vessel using these metals can function as an electrochemical cell, and recent reconstruction work keeps the battery hypothesis technically alive. Yet function, intention and archaeological context are different kinds of evidence. At present, the artifact does not establish that Parthian or Sasanian craftspeople possessed an electrical industry, electroplated objects or built networks of batteries. It remains an intriguing disputed interpretation of an incompletely documented object—not a debunked impossibility, but not confirmed ancient technology either.

The Baghdad vessel is valuable precisely because neither a quick dismissal nor a sensational conclusion fits the record. Its components can produce electricity, but archaeological intention requires contextual evidence. It is an unusually clear lesson in the difference between “could work” and “was used.”
