The Kraken and Deep-Ocean Cryptids
Overview
The ocean has repeatedly rewarded caution toward the phrase “that animal cannot exist.” Giant squid were known for centuries through carcasses, beaks, scars on whales and sailors' accounts before scientists obtained photographs of a living animal in its habitat. The colossal squid, a different and heavier species, was identified from remains long before a large near-intact specimen was recovered in 2007, and a living juvenile was filmed in its natural deep-sea habitat only in 2025. These discoveries do not make every sea-monster story literal, but they show how rarely humans observe large deep-water animals alive. The Kraken belongs chiefly to Scandinavian and North Atlantic tradition. Early modern descriptions varied: the creature might resemble an island, create dangerous currents, entangle a ship or be surrounded by abundant fish. Erik Pontoppidan's eighteenth-century Natural History of Norway helped popularize an enormous animal whose back could be mistaken for land. Later art increasingly gave the Kraken giant cephalopod form. Some accounts may preserve encounters with giant squid, whales, masses of animals, floating debris, dangerous currents or stories enlarged through repeated telling. There is no evidence for a mile-wide cephalopod, but the tradition may contain observation as well as imagination. Giant squid, Architeuthis dux, can reach impressive lengths, much of which comes from two long feeding tentacles. Colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, are shorter in verified specimens but heavier, with rotating hooks on their limbs. Both are elusive and poorly known compared with coastal animals. Sperm-whale stomach contents and scars demonstrate deep predator-prey encounters humans almost never witness. The 2007 colossal-squid specimen at New Zealand's Te Papa museum and modern deep-sea recordings give researchers testable anatomy rather than forcing a choice between sailor and skeptic. This history supports biological plausibility only within limits. A new species is most likely to be small, geographically restricted or difficult to sample. A population of ship-sized predators would require substantial food and should leave bodies, environmental DNA, prey remains, sonar tracks or repeated clear recordings. The larger the proposed animal, the more ecological traces a breeding population should produce. Vast water and sparse observation make discovery difficult, but they do not erase energy requirements or reproduction. Underwater sounds illustrate how mystery changes with evidence. NOAA recorded the powerful low-frequency “Bloop” in 1997. Because its sound profile seemed organic to some listeners, popular accounts imagined an animal larger than a whale. Later comparison with Antarctic recordings showed that the signal was consistent with icequakes produced as large ice masses crack and fracture. The Bloop was genuinely unidentified for a time and later received a strong non-animal explanation. Solving that case does not show that every unusual sound is ice, but continuing to list the Bloop as evidence for megafauna ignores the evidence that answered it. The so-called 52-hertz whale presents a different case: a recurring call at an unusual frequency, plausibly produced by a whale whose identity and circumstances were initially uncertain. “Unusual signal” does not equal “unknown monster.” Hydrophones also record ships, seismic activity, ice, military activity and known animals over immense distances, making source identification a technical problem rather than a contest between belief and disbelief. Many marine species remain undescribed, particularly in the deep sea and among small invertebrates and microorganisms. Humans have visually sampled only a minute portion of the deep seafloor. New sharks, gelatinous animals, cephalopods and entire ecosystems continue to surprise researchers. It is therefore reasonable to expect unknown large animals within biological limits and unreasonable to assign every ambiguous image or sound to one. Strong cryptid evidence would combine independent observations with location, scale and chain of custody: a specimen or tissue sample, diagnostic environmental DNA, multi-angle imagery with known dimensions, repeated sonar returns, or remains available to several institutions. Fisher and Indigenous maritime knowledge can guide science toward species and behaviors overlooked by formal surveys; it should be recorded respectfully rather than mined only for sensational monsters. The Kraken sits at a productive boundary between folklore and zoology. The legendary creature as described is not confirmed, while real giant and colossal squid show that sailors' oceans contained animals science took time to see alive. The correct lesson is neither “all monsters are real” nor “old witnesses knew nothing.” It is that extraordinary marine claims should remain open to discovery while each specific signal, body and story is tested on its own evidence.
